What Is Ceramic Coating and Is It Worth It for Everyday Cars?

Ceramic coating has become one of the most talked-about services in detailing over the last few years. But there's also a lot of confusion about what it actually does, how long it lasts, and whether it makes sense for a regular daily driver or just for high-end vehicles. Here's a straightforward breakdown.

What ceramic coating actually is

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds chemically to your car's clear coat, forming a hard, semi-permanent protective layer. Unlike wax, which sits on top of the paint and washes away over months, a properly applied ceramic coating becomes part of the surface. It doesn't wash off, it doesn't need reapplication every few months, and it creates a layer that's much harder than what wax provides.

What it does well

  • Repels water, mud, and road grime so your car stays cleaner longer

  • Protects against UV fading and oxidation

  • Makes the paint significantly easier to wash — contaminants don't bond as easily

  • Adds a deep, glossy finish that holds up for years

  • Protects against light chemical etching from bird droppings and tree sap

What it doesn't do

Ceramic coating is not a scratch-proof forcefield. It adds hardness and slickness, which reduces light swirl marks from washing, but it won't protect against rock chips, door dings, or serious contact. It also doesn't fix existing paint issues — your paint needs to be properly decontaminated and corrected before the coating goes on, otherwise you're sealing in the damage.

Is it worth it for an everyday car?

Yes, especially in the Pacific Northwest. We deal with rain nine months of the year, road grime, tree sap, and intense UV in the summer. A ceramic coating that lasts three or more years means less time washing, less money spent on wax and detailing products, and better protection for your paint over the life of the car.

At Schmitt's, ceramic coating packages start at $600 and include paint decontamination and at least one stage of paint correction before the coating is applied. If you're in Lake Stevens, Everett, Marysville, Snohomish, or Monroe and want to know if your car is a good candidate, text me at 425-577-9591 and I'll give you an honest answer.
